Story of inmate who learned the Quran may be made into a movie

A popular Arab entertainer is considering making a movie about a woman who was freed from a life sentence for learning the Quran.
Layla Kaylif’s new production company, Cannopus Films, has sought out Fatima bin Mohammed to negotiate making a film about how she earned her freedom from a Dubai prison as a reward for learning the entire Holy Quran.

According to a source, Cannopus is interested in telling the story of Bin Mohammed and hiring her as a consultant on set.
Cameroon national Bin Mohammed, formerly known as Noelle Shantelle, was jailed for life in 2007 for importing hashish – but was released from jail in March under a project that allows prisoners early release for learning the Quran. Kaylif, also a singer, is known for her hit ‘Shakespeare In Love’. She sings in English and Arabic.

Based in Dubai, Kaylif has recently become more interested in film production, and read Bin Mohammed’s compelling story in 7DAYS last week.
“Layla would like to develop Fatima’s story into a script,” a source said. “We would approach a UK/US production company.

“We already have a vision for the film and would aim to secure permission to shoot it in the UAE.
“We would offer Fatima a position on the team that she deems suitable.
“If Fatima likes the initial treatment and wants to continue, we can agree on a rights fee and/or percentage and title for Fatima on the production.”

Bin Mohammed, who spent almost six years learning every word of the Quran behind bars, welcomed the news. She said she looked forward to talking to the production company.
