Pakistani couple beheaded for marrying

Despite hard work on the part of numerous legislators and human rights activists, a steady number of 'honour killing' cases continue to be reported.
A young couple in Pakistan has been tied up and had their throats slit with scythes after they married for love, police have said in what is the latest reported case of so-called "honour killings" in the country.
The 17-year-old girl and 31-year-old man married on June 18 without the consent of their families in eastern Pakistan's Punjabi village of Satrah, police said on Saturday.
The girl's mother and father lured the couple home late on Thursday with the promise that their marriage would receive a family blessing, said local police official Rana Zashid.
"When the couple reached there, they tied them with ropes," he said. "He [the girl's father] cut their throats."
Iranian Ameneh survived an `honor` killing attempt.
A local police official, Mohammad Ahsanullah, said the incident took place last Thursday in the village of Satrah in Punjab province.

He said the perpetrators are currently serving in Sialkot jail after they handed over themselves into the police.
Honor killings, where women are killed by their relatives, is not rare in Pakistan as thousands of women are killed by their families every year, specifically in Pakistan’s rural areas.
Survived but brutalized
The United Nations report around 5,000 women are killed every year in Pakistan; however, women’s advicacy groups believe that number is relatively high as the crime is underreported.
In the meantime, Pakistan’s human rights commission has said at least 869 women were victims of honor killings last year.
